World AIDS Week

Druid Hills Middle School will be participating in World AIDS Week. World AIDS day is December 1, which is the first day back from Thanksgiving break. We will be doing activities all week, including having our AIDS quilt on display. We will ask everyone to wear red on Friday, December 5 to culminate our week.

Lesson plans will be centered on providing students with information about AIDS. Two panels from the AIDS quilt will be on display in the media center. Students will be viewing the quilt with their ELA classes. There will be a pre and post lesson in reference to the quilt.

The purpose of the AIDS Memorial Quilt is to remember the lives and deaths of some of the victims of AIDS. Started in 1987 in San Francisco, each panel is 3 feet by 6 feet, which is the size of a coffin. The panels are sewn together in blocks, which measure 12 feet square. There are currently more than 40,000 blocks, each made of 8 panels, usually representing 8 people.

We welcome you to view the quilt on December 2, 2014 from 8:00AM until 6:00PM.
