The Druid Hills Boys Soccer Club won their first championship in school history Wednesday against a tough Fugees team. The final tally ended up 4-2 as Menkaseh Tokpa led the charge with a goal and two assists. He also picked up his sixth Man of the Match Award for the season in the final. Sergio Ramirez also scored a goal and assisted another and constantly proved to be a menace at striker for the Fugees defense. Nate Jackson also scored and Eric Sinkler headed in what proved to be the winner off a beautiful service from the aforementioned Menkaseh. Yolian Zerom saved two penalty kicks and had his best game when we needed it most from the keeper position. The back line of Jamie Orson, Aung Lay and Deon McPhee played an excellent game against an incredibly fast attacking Fugees side. Franck Bwelle played another effective match shutting down a very talented attacking center midfielder with awesome man-marking all game that restricted the ability of the Fugees to play through one of their danger men. Coach James Hartzell did a great job all season working with keepers Yolian Zerom and Jody England and both improved greatly from beginning to end. Coach Bodnar is also very proud of the championship season and final record of 8 wins 2 losses and 2 ties in a very talented league that includes Inman, PATH Academy, Atlanta International School, Paideia, Sutton, Renfroe and the Fugees.
Advancing to the finals was no easy task as the Dragons took on the previously undefeated and top seed PATH Academy in the semifinals Wednesday October 29. The boys eked out a 1-0 victory at Oglethorpe University. Jamie Orson was awarded Man of the Match honors for his great defensively play and magic finish off another great corner kick service from Menkaseh Tokpa to score the only goal in a fast and furious matchup.
