United Nations/World Peace/Diversity Day

This Friday, October 24, 2014, marks the global observance of United Nations Day. The United Nations came into being on October 24, 1945, when the five permanent members of the security council ratified the UN charter. These original five member nations were: France, the Republic of China, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and the United States. Since 1948, the event's anniversary has been known as United Nations Day. It is an occasion to highlight, celebrate and reflect on the work of the United Nations and its family of specialized agencies.

Here at DHMS, we would like to honor and celebrate the day by having students and faculty dress in clothing that best represents their families' heritage.

"The United Nations is needed more than ever at this time of multiple crises.... At this critical moment, let us reaffirm our commitment to empowering the marginalized and vulnerable. On United Nations Day, I call on Governments and individuals to work in common cause for the common good. "

---United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
